In compliance with a notice served by BBMP, we, Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT), have stopped nurturing and protecting Puttenahalli Lake in JP Nagar, Bengaluru as of July 3, 2025.
PNLIT became official citizen caretakers of Puttenahalli Puttakere in 2011, the first in Bengaluru. We had nurtured the lake with infrastructural backing from BBMP, donations and volunteer support from the neighbourhood. It had become a cherished community hub and an avian hotspot (125 species recorded in ebird), rich in biodiversity.
Why did BBMP want to end a successful Public Private People Partnership? Your guess is as good as ours.
Our heart may be broken but we step down with head held high.
If someone had ever said that I would one day look into storm water drains to check for sewage, I would have laughed and scorned the soothsayer. The joke would have been on me. Such a sight now makes me angry, and worried, about how it would affect the Puttenahalli Lake which I have been nurturing from 2010 together with my friends at the Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust.
